Print estimate guide
Read PDF trim and bleed boxes before quoting print
PDF page boxes are factual geometry, not a promise that artwork extends correctly. An estimate-input report should distinguish an absent box, a box equal to trim, a larger bleed box and invalid geometry.
Start with the media box
The media box defines the physical page canvas in the PDF. Group its dimensions across the job to reveal mixed sizes before interpreting finishing requirements.
Treat trim as the intended cut size
When a trim box is explicitly present, record it separately. If it is absent, do not invent one from a favorite preset or customer expectation.
Compare bleed to trim
A bleed box larger than trim is a useful signal. A bleed box equal to trim is declared but has no extra margin; an absent or invalid box needs a different review state.
Confirm artwork with production
Box geometry cannot prove that live artwork reaches the bleed edge or that marks and imposition are correct. The printer still needs to review the final production file.
